What Is The Truth of The Statement Attributed To Al-Sudani Regarding Reducing The US Dollar Exchange Rate To 119 Thousand Iraqi Dinars?

A piece of news circulated on social media platforms: “Al-Sudani: The 2023 budget, the dollar exchange rate will drop to 119 thousand instead of 147 thousand".

The Truth

The news is fake, and the Secretary-General of the Euphrates Movement and the candidate for the coordination framework for the presidency of the Council of Ministers (Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani) did not make a similar statement and did not announce similar news through any of his official accounts on social media, and none of the official and unofficial local media outlets reported such news or statement concerning him.

And regarding changing the dollar exchange rate, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank (Ammar Khalaf) said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency on July 10, 2022, that:

"There is no reason to change it"

Adding:

"There is no future plan to change the exchange rate even after 3-5 years"

Confirming that:

“The exchange rate is within the monetary policy and is restricted within the specialty of the Central Bank, and when there is a necessity, changing the exchange rate becomes a possibility, but currently there is no justification or need to change it.”

The Central Bank of Iraq had previously issued a statement on February 20, 2022, in which it stated that there were no intentions to change the current dollar exchange rate, especially after the positive results it had achieved, stressing that it had sufficient foreign reserves to stabilize the dollar exchange rate.

The Central Bank of Iraq had decided on December 19, 2022, to adjust the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar, as the purchase price of the dollar from the Ministry of Finance amounted to 1450 dinars, and its sale price to banks was set at 1460 dinars per dollar, while the selling price to the citizen is 1470 dinars per dollar.
