The truth
The attached claim is fake, the Simpsons series did not predict an assassination attempt on the former US president and current candidate, (Donald Trump).
The circulated video is composed of several scenes, some of which are fake and others depict different events, as follows:
- The claim in the first scene of the video that the episode was produced in 1999 is false, as there is no such episode containing all these scenes.
- The second scene is a video showing the main character of the series (Homer) behind (Trump), which was first released in 2015 as part of a promotional clip for the new season at that time, mocking Trump’s 2016 election campaign. In it, Homer agreed to carry a sign for $50 at Trump’s campaign launch, referring to the reports at the time that Trump offered money to actors to celebrate when he announced his campaign.
- In the middle of the video, an image appears showing Trump in a coffin. Upon investigation, we found no episode in any of the series’ seasons that includes such a scene about Trump’s death or predicting it. We had previously clarified the truth about this image in 2020 when it was circulated after Trump announced he had was infected by coronavirus. This was confirmed by the Snopes website, which denied the claim that The Simpsons predicted Trump’s death in 2017.
- The final scene showing Trump in pajamas is from an episode of the series broadcast in 2017, which its events take place inside the White House 100 days after Trump took office, following his victory in the 2016 presidential election and his claiming of office in November 2016.
The circulation of this video accompanied by the fake claim comes after Trump was targeted on Sunday, July 14, 2024, while delivering a speech as part of his election campaign in Pennsylvania.
