What is the truth about the news of an Internet outage worldwide tomorrow, October 11, 2023?

A piece of news circulated on social media platforms claiming that Internet service would be cut off worldwide tomorrow, October 11, 2023.

The truth:

The claim is false. No credible source confirms the circulated claim regarding the internet outage on October 11, 2023. Moreover, global media outlets have not reported a similar claim.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organization responsible for ensuring a secure, stable, and unified global Internet, has denied the rumors currently circulating about a worldwide Internet service disruption, stating:

"The rumors currently being circulated about the interruption of Internet services around the world are not true."

Additionally, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of the United Arab Emirates refuted, on October 3, 2023, the rumors about a global internet service interruption in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter), stating:

"There is no internet service interruption on October 11."

Adding:

"We also invite you to obtain information from official sources."

Some users have connected this rumor with a previous one that circulated in August 2023, claiming "NASA warns of an upcoming solar storm in the coming months," and stated that the alleged disruption was due to the solar storm. However, this claim is also misleading, as the news of NASA's announcement about an upcoming solar storm is untrue. Furthermore, the agency confirmed in a previous official statement reported by the media outlets:

"All the information circulating about a global internet outage is just baseless rumors with no factual basis."

It's worth noting that we previously investigated and debunked a similar rumor on September 17, 2023.
