Did the General Traffic Directorate announce the possibility of tinting car windows in the coming months in consideration of the summer heat?

A news report circulated on social media stating, "The General Traffic Directorate announced the allowance of window tinting during the months of June, July, and August for humanitarian reasons due to the extreme heat in Iraq."

The truth

The attached claim is not true. By checking the official websites of the General Traffic Directorate, it was found that no such statement was issued.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Interior had previously announced in July 2023 the regulations for the percentage of window tinting and its fees, as well as the categories covered by these regulations, to alleviate the burden on citizens during the hot summer. The Ministry's statement mentioned:

"The committee set the tinting percentage at 30% in exchange for a fee of 2,500,000 dinars. If the tinting percentage is 40%, the fee is 3,500,000 dinars, while a tinting percentage of 50% requires a fee of 5,000,000 dinars. Approval for these included vehicles will be issued for one year, renewable for the specified fees," the statement added. "The front windshield cannot be tinted, and it should not be reflective. Approvals for tinting will not be granted to taxis, buses, and all types of internal public transport buses, as well as cargo and goods transport vehicles of all kinds. The committee also recommended allowing fabric curtains for tourist buses with a capacity of 40 passengers or more, belonging to registered tourist companies and designated for external public transport, provided they have no fewer than 10 passengers during working periods."

In an interview with Alsumaria News, the head of the media division in the General Traffic Directorate (Haider Shakir) denied the circulating news, stating:

"The directorate enforces Traffic Law No. 8 of 2019, which includes a traffic violation regarding tinted windows."
